US Learn to Foil/ Wing Foil 1 Hour Private Lesson with Jetski

Learn to Foil - Private 1 Hour Foil Lesson Trust me, it will seem like a lot more than 1 hour :)

- If EXTRA TIME is required or you have the oppotunity and you wish to continue your lesson for longer than the allocated 1 hour. This is charged at a rate of $100 per hour.

We teach at Orewa Beach wing foiling and foiling from Zero to Hero and have slots available from early morning to late evening.

Contact Nick 0212891660 or nick@undergroundsurf.co.nz for custom programs or intensive courses. We can sort local accommodation.

STOP: DO NOT BUY ANYTHING TO DO WITH WING FOILING UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS:

Just because you can windsurf or sail does not mean you can foil. We teach foiling as the central part of our lessons. I often relate to a sport like rugby. Is it better to be the fastest runner with no ball skills or have the best ball skills and no legs... Pretty simple, right?! KNOWING HOW TO FOIL IS VITAL!

My name is Nick. I have owned and operated Underground Skate & Surf for 25 years. I have run over 125 foil lessons, foiled for over four years and wing foiled for almost two years and have learnt a lot about board sports, brands and teaching people over the last 25 years. I have talked to customers riding all types of foils, in all kinds of disciplines for well over 3,000 hours. That, combined with talking to and learning from some of the world's leading foil experts like Armie Armstrong means I would know more than you can ever gain from some 'how to' YouTube reviews or 'what foil should I buy' forum post'.

I am so passionate about foiling and especially wing foiling. I want more people to join me in the ocean and experience a downwinder of surfing endless pumps for 10+km.

THE DREAMER.

Every day I get calls from people who are internet experts who have started to buy gear. DO NOT go shopping before booking a lesson first, and let's see where you are at. $250 is NOTHING compared to spending $3000k + going down the rabbit hole with no idea what you are looking for.

LEARNING TO FOIL.

Foiling is extremely difficult and so simple in the same sentence; it's like riding a bike. If you taught kids, it might have seemed like they would never get off the training wheels, then one day they click, and off they go ever to use the training wheels again. Foiling is so similar. Once you click, it's easy, but without coaching, it's tough for most people unless you are a gifted boardrider already.

WHY TAKE A LESSON?

  • We refund a lesson for every $2500 spent in-store. Work with us on a couple of lessons, and we will be able to downsize your board and foils in a couple of lessons. This will save you big $$$.
  • Access where you are in the learning path. Often those with the most confidence e.g. good surfers and windsurfers, are sometimes the worst foilers in the initial phase but catch on fast later.
  • We have all the best learn to foil gear. We can start you on a giant 8'6 board and work right down to a 12L 4'0 board.
  • We have a new Seadoo jetski, Orewa Beach front location, and all lessons are private.
  • We will work at your pace, ability and fitness level to keep you comfortable. I've run lessons from 10-year-olds to 80-year-olds.
  • I will chat over what type of foiling you want to do. Tow, Wing, Wake, and Surf are all very different. I'm happy to provide advice on secondhand gear you may be considering.
  • We sell numerous brands from low-priced to the highest quality made. If you only want to play around behind the boat tender, you need very different gear from someone wanting to do airs.
  • We use the latest newest generation Armstrong gear in lessons.
  • I will provide video footage and photos of your lesson for training analysis.

ALL THE GEAR AND NO IDEA. THIS IS BECOMING COMMON. 'I brought gear last summer, but I still haven't been able to work it out.'

If this sounds like you, then you should consider a lesson.

  • You have been out a couple of times on the new gear that cost you $$$$, and you got flogged, washed down the beach or out to sea and thought, 'Bugger that' and parked it in the garage. Now each time you look at it, you think should I sell that or should I harden up and give it another go? You may have even hidden it from your better half because you are sick of the lectures. Let me bring the confidence back and get you amped to get out there. I can help with your set-up and check its feeling good. Hell, we even had one guy give up because he was putting his foil on upside down. LOL One lesson, and he was frothing again, keen to get back into it.
  • Everyone else seems to be up foiling around you as you windsurf your way across the ocean.  You need to learn how to pump up the foil and catch the wind in the sail.  Book a lesson.
  • If you have been out more than twice behind a boat or jetski and tried for more than an hour each time and cannot cross the wake or let go of the rope and taxi the board up and down you need a lesson.
  • Have jumped into gear already, and it's been more than 10 hours of water time, and you are not flying for a couple of hundred metres at a time. You need a lesson.
  • If you have been winging for more than 20 hours of water time and you cannot link gybes, you need a lesson.
  • If you cannot put the wing behind you and pump after 25 hours of water time, you need tow foil lessons to control the foil.
  • If you are scared to go out in strong offshore winds and it's been more than 30 hours of water time, you need a lesson.
  • If you cannot gain ground and sail into the wind well after 40 hours, you need a lesson.
  • If you are scared of a downwinder and ocean waves after 60 hours, you should get a lesson if you want to learn this.
  • You need to come to grips with your sinker board.  Let us shadow you on the jetski in flat water with strong winds.  Any issues I will have your back and can help you.

EXAMPLE LESSON TYPES:

FIRST-TIME FOILERS OR HAVE TRIED AND FAILED LEARNIING SOLO.

  • LESSON ONE: We teach you how to foil on a big board and maybe step down during the lesson depending on your ability. If you are entirely new to board sports with no stance, we will tow you on sup to start and get an understanding of edge control.
  • LESSON TWO: Carry on from the last lesson. We will look to move towards demo gear that would suit the first package. If you want to learn wake/tow / prone and not wing, we will move you to a small tow board and teach you to water start. If you want to wing and are doing well, we will introduce the wind wing in the second half of the lesson.
  • LESSON THREE: Tow/wake / prone we will teach the concepts of pumping and glide off the tow rope. Wing lessons we will take you out in 15-25 knot offshores and shadow you. You will get to watch Nick from the jetski, and Nick will coach you from only a couple of metres away on the jetski as you blow out to sea. Once we end up in the choppy water, we will tow everything back to shore and start again. This is a great way to learn.

Beyond here, we can coach to any level. If it's beyond my skills, we have some rippers we can call in to help in any aspect from pumping to airs or low vol board water starts.

Other ways we can teach are wing skills using a paddleboard and sand skateboard.

We do not focus on the sailing side at the start. This comes naturally for most people once you can stay on the foil. If you want to learn the sailing part, we suggest you learn with Madloop here in Takapuna.

I highly recommend taking an approach where you treat the foiling and wing control as two separate sports. Spend at least 5 hours doing each, and then when you add the two together, you will have fun from day one.

About Underground Skate & Surf:

With 2022 seeing US celebrating its 25th year in the industry, you can be sure to get the best advice from a team of experts who have shredded it all and built a deep knowledge base in the process.

Underground was started in 1997 by Nick Humphreys from a car boot.

After studying Marketing for 18 months he flagged his tertiary studies. Sick of doing assignments on bogus companies, he drew down his student loan money buying skate gear and printing tees. "I started with $3000, a wad of stickers, flyers, 10 tees friends had designed, 15 decks my brother and I imported from the USA and my homework desk".

Since then, Underground Skate has become US, specialising in Surf, Skate and Fashion.

Underground has always been about ‘our community’, hence the name US.  It represents us, the ‘jackass’ generation of young people who like to have fun, push the rules and enjoy our lives.

‘If you know what US stands for, then you are a part of US’.

Underground has stayed true to its roots since its inception with a consistent, and solid Skate range available at all times.

Being situated right next to the water in Orewa beach, just North of Auckland, it was inevitable for Underground to move into water sports and bring both Surf, SUP and Foil into the fold in recent years. Since then Underground has continued to be owned and operated by a tight knit crew of passionate surfers and skaters who all share a true love for standing sideways.
